Students should be aware that is it a requirement of CJMD that you complete a minimum of 200 hours work experience as part of your chosen qualification.  However, as CJMD provides the best possible opportunities that we can offer, it is preferred that you complete up to 500 hours of work experience. Due to the industry contacts CJMD has and the highly regarded reputation our school and students have, we almost always have work experience available for students.  This work experience is usually unpaid; however you reap the benefits of industry experience and contacts, which are invaluable to your training and success.  We have many regular clients who call us on short notice requiring one or more students for a job that afternoon, the next day, week, etc.  Due to the dynamic nature of the industry, we will sometimes only have a short space of time to fill these positions.

Most work experience is on a ‘first in, best placed’ basis.  However we will often also allocate work experience to the student we feel is best suited to the particular job.  When considering this, we take into account the following:

  • Your skills and knowledge in the relevant area required for the production;
  • Your punctuality and attendance;
  • Your willingness to participate in work experience;
  • Your previous work experience;
  • Any feedback received from clients and industry professionals;
  • Any other contributing factors such as transport, age, experience and availability.

Students will be issued with a work experience record book. When a student partakes in work experience, the supervisor will be asked to complete a number of questions as part of continuous improvement towards the student’s knowledge, skills, weakness and strengths.  These contact details and information are used and included in your resume when approaching clients for paid work or assisting jobs.  It is also important to ensure you keep an accurate record of any classes missed so you can catch up missed topics and/or assessments with other classes.

 Most of our students have gained paid work through contacts and experience gained through work experience, so we encourage you to make the most of the opportunities we provide.
